Marshall one of three on top for DB Cagan Campbell
One of Marshall’s key targets in the 2018 class is a defensive back from the state of Alabama.
Tuscaloosa (Alabama) Hillcrest’s Cagan Campbell has made an in-person visit to Marshall this summer, as well as a few other stops on the camp circuit.
“I really wanted to get out to a couple of bigger school camps to get myself noticed,” he told HerdNation.com. “I was at Mississippi State and at Ole Miss the day before. I’ve visited South Alabama and Marshall and plan to take another trip to Southern Miss in July.”
The trip to Huntington appeared to be a home run in terms of the Thundering Herd staff’s ultimate chances with Campbell.
“Marshall was a great experience, honestly. Their student academic center was top of the line. My dad and I really enjoyed that. Their student athletes get a lot of attention and that’s great,” he said.
One coach on staff in particular caught the attention of Campbell and his father.
Said Campbell: “Their weight room and how they do their strength and conditioning program is amazing. Their strength coach, he’s a cool guy. He knows exactly what he’s doing and how to do it. He knows how to make kids bigger and stronger.”
Out of the schools that have offered and/or shown interest in Campbell to date, he singled out one as doing the most thorough job in recruiting him. That program is Doc Holliday’s.
“Our relationship is getting stronger and stronger week after week and that’s something that’s really impressing me because they’re really the only school that reaches out to me as much as they do,” Campbell explained. “I really like that, them showing me that much attention. I stay in constant contact with them. I probably talk to them, no lie, every day of the week. They send me mail day after day and I talk on the phone with them quite a bit. We text all the time.”
The two-star defender was asked if there are any front-runners at this stage.
“Definitely Marshall,” he said. “We’re really liking Marshall. We really like Southern Miss, and the other school would probably be South Alabama.”
Campbell hopes to make his decision and then keep it under wraps for a while, allowing the program to which he commits some advance planning prior to February. He will consider several factors during the process.
“I plan on telling a school where I’m going to go but I won’t announce anything until signing day,” he said. “I want to go to a school that has a family atmosphere, somewhere I know I’ll feel a part of and welcomes me with open arms my freshman year. Another thing I want to look at is their academics, if they give them the attention they need to help them succeed in the classroom. The third thing is I want go to a team that wins. It’s better to have a winning season every year.”
