Marshall Falls at Tulane 91-75

NEW ORLEANS - DeAndre Kane and Dennis Tinnon both recorded a double-double, but a poorly played first half doomed the Marshall men's basketball team in route to a 91-75 loss to Tulane on Wednesday at Devlin Fieldhouse.

The Thundering Herd (10-13, 3-5 Conference USA) trailed by 24 points, its largest margin of the game, at the halftime with the score 59-35. Marshall shot 50 percent in the second half and cut the deficit to 14 points on two occasions under the eight minute mark.

"I'm thoroughly disappointed with our deplorable defense in the first 20 minutes of the game," said head coach Tom Herrion. "We had no resistance, no fight, awful defensively."

Kane 14 points and 11 assists for his second double-double of the season. Tinnon finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds, five offensive, his sixth double-double of the season.

Junior forward Elijah Pittman scored a career-high 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting including four three-pointers. He shared game-high honors with Tulane big man Josh Davis who had 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Marshall led 8-7 after a Pittman three-pointer at the 16:11 mark. Ricky Tarrant hit a three on the Green Wave's very next possession, the first of 11 treys for the home team, and the Herd never again regained the lead.

Marshall slowly chipped away at the deficit and trailed by just 14, 72-58, with 7:36 to play. Tulane scored a field goal to push the margin back to 16, but then two free throws by Kane cut it to 14 again, 74-60 with 6:58 to play. Marshall did not get any closer as the Green Wave (15-8, 3-5 C-USA) went on a 15-6 run to go ahead by 23, 89-66 with just over two minutes remaining.

"We fought. We battled a little bit in the second half," Herrion said.

Marshall committed 16 turnovers while Tulane had just nine with 17 assists.

The Herd shared the ball by evidence of its 20 assists, the most in 13 games, and made 27 field goals on 58 attempts (46.6 percent). The Green Wave shot 46.8 percent and was 11-of-25 (44.0 percent) from three-point range.

Marshall will continue its road trip on Saturday when it plays at UAB (10-13, 2-6 C-USA) at 3 p.m. The Blazers defeated Tulsa 70-63 on Wednesday.
