Marshall Downed by Ohio on the Road

ATHENS, Ohio - Hot shooting from Ohio as well as stingy defense propelled the Bobcats past the Marshall men's basketball team, 94-57, Saturday inside the Ohio Convocation Center.
Marshall (7-8) was led in scoring by D.D. Scarver who tossed in 13. Jamir Hanner had a strong performance off the bench, with career highs in both points (12) and rebounds (7).
Ohio (9-5) had five players in double figures, including senior D.J. Hunter who had a double-double with 12 points and 17 assists. His assist total was a single-game Ohio record as well as a Convocation Center record.
"I'm very disappointed," said head coach Tom Herrion. "Our inability to take care of the ball at every position and pretty much every player was inexplicable to a certain extent and unacceptable. There is no team in the country who plays (good) defense with those types of turnovers."
The Thundering Herd was shut down by the Ohio defense, which held MU to 35.1 percent from the field and forced 26 turnovers, including 19 in the first half. The Bobcats turned those 26 forced turnovers into 51 points.
"When you turn it over like that, you have no shot," Herrion said.
On the other hand, the Bobcats enjoyed a tremendous shooting afternoon, posting a 65.3 percent from the field, including an 11-for-23 figure from three point distance.
Marshall did outrebound Ohio, 43-27, the 10th time this season it has done so, but couldn't turn those boards into points. Dennis Tinnon had a game-high 13 rebounds, the 26th time of his career he has had double-digit boards.
The Bobcats controlled the game from the early onset of the contest. OU opened up the game on a 9-1 run then extended their lead to 17-4 with 15:21 left on the first half clock.
With Marshall trailing by 10 with 11:32 on the clock, the Bobcats proceeded to score 17 straight points and build a 27 point lead. Ohio held its largest lead of the first half of 33 at the 1:13 mark. The Herd went into the half down 56-24.
Despite a quick seven point spurt out of the locker run that would narrow the lead to 56-31, 25 points was the closet Marshall would find itself to the opposition in the half.
A 10-0 run by the Bobcats late in the second half resulted in Ohio's largest lead, 38 points, with 4:15 left in the game.
"At the end of the day we've got to start making some basketball plays," Herrion said. "Our basketball players have to start making basketball plays."
DeAndre Kane appeared in a game for the first time in five games, scoring six points and grabbing eight rebounds in 20 minutes.
The Herd begins Conference USA play Wednesday as it hosts the Danny Manning-led Tulsa Golden Hurricane for a 7 p.m. tip inside the Cam Henderson Center.
