Doc Holliday's 2018 recruiting class at Marshall is in the books and checks in at No. 69 overall in the nation.
MU also finished with the top rated class in all of Conference USA.
Herdnation.com takes one final look at where needs were met or fell short and assigns final grades by position before finally putting a bow on 2018 and turning our attention to 2019 and beyond.
Quarterback
Needed 1; Signed 1
Chase Litton's departure to the NFL surprised both Marshall coaches and fans and left a gaping hole class balance wise on the roster after underclassmen Garet Morrell, Isaiah Green and Jackson White. After moving in a different direction from former commit Kai Locksley, Marshall targeted Wagner transfer Alex Thomson and ended up landing the talented NJ native after putting the full court press on him during his official visit in January. Thomson not only fills an immediate need, but because he has two years of eligibility left, new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Cramsey has the luxury of taking his time evaluating Marshall's two 2019 QB commits Grant Wells and Maurice Underwood.

Running Back
Needed: 1-2; Signed: 2 plus one RB/DB (Wilkins)
Marshall returns a ton at RB in 2018 with Tyler King, Keion Davis, Anthony Anderson, Brenden Knox and Sheldon Evans - so the need for three at this position wasn't apparent. Sykes was a must take and Papillon projects to help immediately in the return game so it appeared the staff was set until Wilkins fell into the coaching staff's lap on signing day. Wilkins was simply too good of an athlete for the staff to pass on and comes with the added benefit that he could also fit on the defensive side of the ball.
Grade: A
Wide Receiver
Needed: 3-4; Signed 8
Wow. Where to begin with the wide receiver group? It's clear new OC Tim Cramsey took a look at the current WR depth chart and decided the group needed a massive influx of talent. Mission accomplished, coach. Marshall signed six high school wide receivers and two instant impact JUCOs. The best part about this group is its easy to project a complete two-deep at the X, Y and Z positions.
Grade: A+
Tight End
Needed 1; Signed 1
With Cassidy signing, Marshall will have five scholarship tight ends on its roster for the 2018 season. Cody Mitchell is the unquestioned starter with 2017 JC signee Armani Levias a solid bet to be his back-up. Former QB Xavier Gaines is an intriguing prospect and could make a huge jump while Devin Miller will be coming off a red-shirt season. All of that means Cassidy can red-shirt and develop in the weight room without having to be rushed into playing time.
Grade: B
Offensive Line
Needed 3-4; Signed 4
Much like the WR position, the haul at offensive line was impressive in both raw numbers and in versatility. Dalton Tucker and Ethan Bingham project as tackles while Trey Livingood and Zack Ferris project as inside guys. All four should be able to red-shirt in 2018, setting offensive line coach Alex Mirabal up with a solid foundation for the future much like the 2016 OL class is shaping up to be. Many Herd fans wanted a JUCO or grad transfer tackle in this class, but with the emergence of Will Ulmer and Tarik Adams at those two positions that proposition ended up being nearly impossible. JUCO and grad transfers want to play immediately and barring injury, there is no PT to be had in 2018 for any newcomers.
Grade: A-
Defensive End
Needed 2-3; Signed 3
Marshall held off a late charge from hometown Louisville to secure McDuffie's signature and appears to have gotten a steal out of Florida in Sam Burton. Both McDuffie and Burton put up huge sack numbers in high school and could carve out roles as true freshman rushing the passer. Local star Owen Porter played LB in high school and is listed as such by Rivals but will start out at DE at Marshall. He is another true freshman who could surprise and push for PT early in his career.
Grade: B+
Defensive Tackle
Needed 2-3; Signed 1-2
HN is including Keenan in this group because that's where we believe he will eventually end up assuming he is able to add 50-60 pounds to his frame over the next two to three years. Morgan, a long time Mississippi State commit, was a late addition to the class but was an important signee with the tragic accident involving Larry Aaron and Elijah Ratliff signing with Kent State. Marshall should be fine numbers wise for 2018 but will need to sign at least two more DTs in 2019, which may very well include a JUCO.
Grade: C
Linebacker
Needed 4; Signed 4
This is an interesting group that includes a relative unknown in local star Isaiah Duncan and two JUCO products that flew under the radar. Add in Bakari Jackson out of Florida and this appears to be a solid group. The addition of both Martin and Hayward was a little curious, but when you consider how top heavy Marshall is with seniors at the LB position it begins to make a ton of sense for 2019.
Grade: B
Cornerback
Needed 2-3: Signed 1-2
Gilmore is the only true cornerback in this class and while he was a steal, it feels like Marshall could have used another signee in this group from a numbers perspective. Wilkins could end up as a CB and there are some who feel he fits there better than at RB, which would help. Marshall chased JC CB Meiko Dotson late but he ended up inking with FAU.
Grade: B-
Safety
Needed 2: Signed 2-3
Sharrod Frazier projects as a hybrid OLB/strong safety while Thompson and Jiles look more like true free safeties. Wherever they end up, all three should add a much needed influx of athleticism at their positions. Jiles is a two sport standout from powerhouse Wake Forest High (NC) while Thompson comes from an often times under recruited part of Alabama that regularly produces solid FBS players.
Grade: A-
Specialists
Needed: 1-2; Signed 1
Rhode Island transfer Justin Rohrwasser fills an immediate need at kicker and is already enrolled and working out with the team. The coaching staff will likely land a PWO or two at long snapper and punter later on this spring.
