Capital Classic on Deck for Men's Basketball

Capital Classic Game Notes

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - With bragging rights and state supremacy on the line, the Marshall men's basketball team will head to the state capital to take on in-state rival West Virginia in the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic, Saturday, at 7:30 p.m.

The game will be televised live statewide and can be viewed on CBS affiliate WOWK in Huntington.

In-game Twitter updates @HerdMBB, results and a recap from the night's action will be available at HerdZone.com.

Unable to overcome a rough shooting night from the field, the Thundering Herd fell to Penn State, 90-77, Dec. 7, at Bryce Jordan Center.

Freshman guard Kareem Canty (Harlem, N.Y.) had a career performance against the Nittany Lions as he scored a career high 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field, while finishing 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. As a team, the Herd went 26-of-66 from the field for 39.4 percent.

In the first half, Marshall shot 29.7 percent from the field on 11-of-37 shooting, while Penn State was 18-of-34 for 52.9 percent. The Herd led in the battle of the boards at the break, outrebounding the Nittany Lions, 24-23. Canty's 17 first-half points were capped off with a three-point bucket at the buzzer from just beyond half court.

For the second-straight week, Canty was named Conference USA Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week, the league office announced, Monday.

Canty averaged 23 points, going 17-of-36 from the field on the week in road losses at Vanderbilt (Dec. 5) and Penn State (Dec. 7). He also shot 8-of-13 from beyond the arc for 61.5 percent. Canty set a career high for scoring at Penn State when he recorded a game-high 28 points in 39 minutes. He scored 18 points and added four assists and two steals against Vanderbilt in 37 minutes.

This marks the 12th Freshman of the Week honor in the history of Marshall men's basketball. Now with the most C-USA Freshman of the Week honors this season, Canty ranks 10th in the nation in assists per game (6.7) and first in C-USA. Marshall has now collected three weekly C-USA honors on the 2013-14 season.

Canty was also named to the College Hoops Daily All-Conference USA team for the month of November at the point guard position.

Entering the Capital Classic, West Virginia has dropped two-consecutive contests, at Missouri (Dec. 5) and at home against No. 16 Gonzaga (Dec. 10).

Sophomore guard, Eron Harris leads the Mountaineers in scoring with 19.3 points per game and is one of three to average double-figure scoring for WVU through the first ten games of the year. Junior guard Juwan Staten leads the Mountaineers in assists with 6.8 per game, ranking eighth in the nation in helpers and first in the Big 12.

WVU finished with a 13-19 overall record in 2012-13, identical to that of the Herd.

Marshall enters the contest trailing in the series, 30-11. The meeting has been on an annual basis at a neutral site since the 1991-92 season. The Mountaineers have won the last two meetings and the Herd has not defeated WVU since Jan. 19, 2011, 75-71.

Marshall will return home to the Cam Henderson Center after its four-game road swing to take on Alice Lloyd, Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m.
