Sun Devils offer 2010 power forward
Arizona State extended a scholarship offer to Buffalo (N.Y.) The Nichols School 2010 power forward Will Regan on Sunday in a phone conversation the 6-foot-8, 217-pounder had with Sun Devil head coach Herb Sendek.
Regan is a recruit the Sun Devils have had an eye on for quite some time, dating back at least a year ago, when he visited the Tempe campus while in the state for the University of Arizona's Elite Camp.
"Dedrique Taylor was the one recruiting me and he wanted me to come up (to ASU) but he was in California so I ended up going up and visiting with Mark Phelps and it kind of went from there," Regan said. "I visited and I really liked the campus and everything. Coach Phelps came up and watched one of my games and then from that and watching me in the spring I guess ASU decided it was interested."
Sendek and Regan spoke on Father's Day, and a verbal offer was extended, according to Regan.
"He just talked to me about ASU and he knew I was already down there with Mark Phelps but he moved on to Drake," Regan said of Phelps. "He just told me he'd like me to come down to help build a good relationship with him personally and I gave the phone to my dad and he talked to him and basically told him the same thing and wished him a happy Father's Day."
A large number of schools are actively recruiting Regan, with ASU, Buffalo, Fordham, Maryland and Penn State reporting offering scholarships.
"I just really want to see who my teammates will eventually be if I commit to a college," Regan said. "So I would wait until my senior year probably and then I want to make sure the coaching staff is pretty steady. Like at ASU I was being recruited by coach Phelps but then after he left I had a good chance to get to know the other coaches. But I want to have that relationship going into school wherever I go.
"When I was down at ASU I really liked it and that was one of my favorite schools that I've seen but as you see every school you realize how nice every school is and the great opportunities you have. I don't know. My three favorites right now are Maryland, ASU and Stanford but it's still so early in the process."
While it's still early in his recruitment, Regan already has a strong idea of what he's looking as he begins the process of narrowing down his options.
"It's going to a school that brings you the best opportunity to succeed basketball-wise and gives you a great education so you have the best opportunity to succeed after school is over," he said of his criteria for making a selection. "A school like Arizona Sate, it's such a large school so its gives you great connections after school."
In describing himself as a player, Regan said that he's hard-nosed and physical above all else, but he also has a skill set that adds to his versatility and makes him more dynamic on the court.
"After the first day of the Hoop Jamboree I had a black eye," Regan said. "I just play hard, try to run the floor hard, things like that. I feel like it's similar to the way (North Carolina star Tyler) Hansbrough plays but obviously not to that same level. I have a jump shot and everything, my back to the basket game is not bad. Not that I'm the worst ball handler but when I go up against more athletic players they can tip the ball and I have a tougher time creating space so I need to keep working on that."
