Dobson Selected 59th Overall by the New England Patriots
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Former Marshall wide receiver Aaron Dobson was selected in the second round (59th overall) by the New England Patriots in the 2013 National Football League Draft.
With the selection, Dobson became the sixth Herd wide receiver to be selected and the first since Darius Watts was taken 54th overall by the Denver Broncos in 2004. He joined Lee Smith (2011) and Troy Brown (1993) as former Marshall players drafted by the Patriots.
Marshall has had at least one player selected in each of the last three NFL Drafts. Last season Vinny Curry was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles, also as the 59th overall pick.
"I think, No. 1, Aaron is a very, very talented guy," Marshall Coach Doc Holliday said of Dobson, whose 24 touchdown receptions are tied for fourth in Herd history with Patriots Hall of Famer Troy Brown. "He had a great career at Marshall and has a great future in the NFL, and the Patriots, they're going to be getting a guy who's a really big-play receiver. He can run, go up for the ball and he has good hands. He has all the skills in the world."
Dobson, a second team selection by the league's coaches last season, was seventh in the league in catches per game (5.7) and receiving yards (67.9). The Dunbar, W.Va., resident finished his career with 24 touchdown receptions, tying former NFL star Troy Brown for fourth in the school's all-time records. A captain on last year's team, the Biletnikoff Award Watch List wideout missed virtually all of two games due to injury, but that didn't stop him from setting a career-high with 57 catches this season. For his career, he finished ninth in the school's all-time record book with 2,398 receiving yards and will attend this year's Senior Bowl.
